Reliquaries, Mare (sea), Caelum (sky), Terra (earth)
Many sacred items surviving from earlier times rest, carefully preserved and revealed in these reliquaries which are inspired by abandoned silos found on old Ohio farmland on State Route 68. Relics are traditionally thought of as having historical or sentimental interest and are hidden away under altars or in vaults until ritual calls them to be displayed. In Reliquaries, items celebrating earth, sea, and sky are openly displayed until gradually they appear to be swallowed by the layer of seeds growing and covering the earthy surface under the screened canopy. Natural order appears to be restored but humankind’s intercession is just below the surface. The reliquaries are inscribed with the Latin phrase, “In Omnia Secula Seculorum” which means through all ages and ages.
Reliquaries was exhibited at Ohio Art League for Rural Routes, then again at Junctionview Studios for PechaKucha, and finally at Shot Tower Gallery for Visible Evidence. Each iteration reveals a deeper understanding of what it means to cherish our world.
