Unnatural Order

Unnatural Order is an installation constructed with collected pods and leaves, crystal beads, sand, lead weights, and woven reclaimed plastic bags. The layering of these materials is inspired by the layers of our planet’s atmosphere, from Exosphere (190,000km above sea level) to Troposphere, a mere 10 kilometers deep, where we live and die alongside the agents of waste and destruction we produce.

This piece speaks a warning - firmly but softly and with a deep undertone of urgency to look again with wonder, through some of the lowliest details, the mystery that is our Earth with its beauty and natural order. Affirm the importance of stewardship, not ownership. Balance, not depletion. Sustenance, not starvation, and integration, not superiority over our planet. The fact is, we humans protect what we love so let’s fall in love before we lose.

Unnatural Order (located at Ohio Theater, 39 E State St, Columbus, OH) was created for Art Spot, a series of temporary public art installations that explore themes around climate change and conservation. Featuring 14 artists, 13 installations and nine locations in and around downtown Columbus, Art Spot installations will be on view 24/7 in the windows of partner businesses and nonprofits through June 30, 2023.
